INTRICATE WORLD
The international society is in a process of transformation. A brief look at the daily headlines reveals that yesterday's unshakable foundations have today been loosened into mere variables. Constellations of power are rapidly shifting with old borders diminished and ever more new ones being raised every day. Entities once dwarfed by the power of traditional institutions are now rising up to challenge the latter's hegemony. Hope fuelled by unprecedented speed of technological advancement is being joined by fears stemming from the harrowing prospect of man's tools developing their own agency. Conflicts long forgotten are once again flaring up from the ash heaps of history, leaving in their wake victims in numbers not witnessed since the end of the greatest conflicts in the history of humankind. Amidst this perplexing flux of change many of us seem to have shut ourselves out; either in awe of the scope and pace of the ongoing change or in search of our place within this new order of things. By doing so, however, we necessarily run the risk of giving up any control we might exert over these processes, thus entering into a free fall in which our ability to overcome future political, economic, social, religious, ethnic or any other confrontations in a peaceful and empathetic manner might be severely constrained. To avoid any such scenario the processes of constant and ever swifter change will need to be underpinned by a state of permanent and all-encompassing dialogue. |
INTEGRATED FORMAT
To help spur an exchange that would take place on several ideational levels, between various fields and across different cultural dimensions we at Model United Nations Slovenia Club (MUNSC) have set out to devise a next generation platform where students from around the world could cooperatively engage with leading political figures, policy makers, NGOs, entrepreneurs, members of epistemic communities, academia, and the media on developing knowledge and skills required to make sense of the world in the 21st century. By combining traditional educational content in the form of workshops, lectures and public panel discussions with the concept of simulating various political decision-making bodies, most rigorously developed within the field of Model United Nations (MUNs), we aim to create an environment in which students will be able to acquire in depth knowledge of some of the most pressing issues of our time and then directly apply it in tackling challenges presented within lifelike scenarios. Our participants shall thus be offered a chance to move beyond discourses grounded in power politics and perpetuated through narrowly framed mainstream discussions; instead setting out on a thorough course of discovering and mapping the underlying determinants of a given issue, while seeking to understand how these shape our views and in turn the (non)-decision-making processes. |
